A finish coat is only as good as the surface it is coating We are frequently asked if VHT Engine Enamels can be painted over a primer or other old paint on the engine. No primer will take the high temperatures required on an engine block. Therefore, primers are not recommended. If the old paint is intact, lightly sand to a dull finish before applying VHT Engine Enamel over it. The topcoat is only as good as the base coat or condition of the metal. If the substrate gives way, the topcoat will follow. |

| VHT Detail Paints are specially formulated to duplicate look of many unpainted metal parts. |
Most engine paints are too thick for radiator use because they can interfere with the heat transfer and block airflow between the cooling fins. This factory-finish aerosol withstands high heat and is just the right gloss and thickness to match most OEM finishes, and is ideal for radiator applications. It is 550ºF (287ºC) chemical resistant. |
With VHT 550ºF (287ºC) chemical resistant gloss, satin and flat black finishes, no primer is required. Just clean, degrease, and prepare the parts well. Then spray for a factory-like appearance. This paint is heat resistant to 550ºF (287ºC), and protects against fading, cracking and chalking. |

Textured Finishes
 |
| When painting automotive interiors, a hard durable long-lasting finish is the key. VHT provides the enthusiast and the professional with three excellent choices of finishes. Lacquer finishes do not build up layers, making them ideal for refinishing moving parts. VHT lacquers provide a high gloss finish, as found in many of todays production cars such as Mustangs and Corvettes. |
For a gloss or satin finish as found in most standard cars, trucks and tractors, use VHT Epoxy All Weather Paints. VHT Epoxy finishes are extremely hard and durable and are ideal for use in high traffic areas or where a long-lasting scuff and scratch resistant surface is required. |
For textured finishes, see VHT Wrinkle Paint. |

Spray Primers

Specific Uses
 |
Selecting and Applying a Primer
 |
VHT Spray Primers are excellent foundations for any alkalyd, acrylic, epoxy or synthetic lacquer paint products. They provide a tough, air-dry base coat with excellent adhesion to intermediate and top coatings. These primers are specially formulated to fill scratches or pin holes caused by sanding or body fillers. They prepare the surface for finish painting, as well as form a strong corrosion barrier.
VHT Spray Primers air dry quickly and can be sanded for multi-layer build-ups, the method most frequently used by professional builders for obtaining optimum smoothness on flat surfaces and contoured surfaces. These primers can be used on metal, fiberglass, masonry, wood and most plastic surfaces. They are ideal for home, automotive, marine, aviation, farm and industrial uses. |
Red Oxide is used on iron and cast or pot metals where oxidation is a problem. Wipe surface with a solution of half vinegar and half water to remove oxidation, rinse thoroughly and let dry. Prime the metal within 24 hours of this process with thin even coats. Lightly sand between coats for the best results.
Zinc Chromate Yellow is used on aluminium surfaces where oxidation causes most primers to lift. It should also be used for surfaces where the substrate has a tendency to flex due to rapid changes in temperature or lack of support. Prime and finish both sides of the aluminium for long lasting results. |
Choose a primer close to the same colour that you will be using for a finish coat, but not the same colour. If you will be using a white for a finish coat, a light grey primer is recommended. This will allow you to easily see if you are applying thin, even coats when finishing, and will reduce the paint build up due to making a drastic colour change. Test the finish coat for compatibility of the primer before starting.
Mask off all areas not to be painted with the paper extending at least 18 inches from the area to be painted. When masking off the area to be sprayed, apply tape far enough away from the area to allow room to feather the spray. Placing the masking tape too close will cause unwanted ridges in the finish coat. Do not paint on windy days, or in dusty surroundings.
Spot prime all areas with exposed metal, scratches and pin holes with two or three very light coats of primer. The primer will dry in 30 to 45 minutes for sanding purposes, lightly sand with 400 to 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper making sure to feather all edges. Rinse thoroughly and wipe with a tac cloth. If scratches are still visible, repeat the process.
Spray VHT primers, using long even strokes, lengthening each stroke on the spray pattern. This will feather the edges as you spray, reducing the need for heavy sanding. For best results, apply the finish coat one or two hours after the final sanding is completed. |
